Manitoba Motocross Association Northern Lites Race Report: Gimli

Report and Photos by Doug Engstrom

After dealing with the disappointment of a rain out early in the season, Gimli’s Northern Lites Raceway hosted the final round of the MMA Spring Provincial Championship Series. With several titles still available for the taking, some fierce battles ensued over the longest track on the circuit.

Westside Honda’s Adam Pfeiffer entered the day with a seven-point lead in the 125 Pro class. Riding like a man on a mission Pfeiffer traded moto wins with the gregscustom.com of Nick Dunn and took the overall to wrap up the title. Dunn and the Headingley Sportshop Kawasaki of Earl Reimer round out the series podium.

Ken Klassen arrived at Gimli knowing he only needed three points to salt away the title in the 40+ B class. Klassen secured those three points and fourty one more with a 2-2 day. Klassen was joined by Richard Vanderwerf and an injured Paul Masse in the top three.

Like father, like son? Ryan Klassen had already secured the title in the Youth B class prior to arriving at Northern Lites raceway. Michael Penner and Keith Morrow complete the top trio in this class.

Lauren Gilmore ran the table in the Little Ladies class this spring winning every moto in the series. Rachel Regier and Jessica Bell stood on the second and third steps respectively.

Ty Shemko was without equal in the 65cc PeeWee class winning the title by seventy-seven points. Jordan Devloo posted a 2-3 day in Gimli to vault over Hayden McKinny for second in the series.

Paul Masse shown in a previous race was injured early in the day at Gimli and did not compete but still managed to hang onto the Vet Junior title by one point over Ken Klassen.

While he only claimed one overall in the series Westside Honda’s Eddie Anderson was on the box every round but one enroute to securing the Youth class title. Anderson was followed to the podium by the gregscustom.com Suzuki of Jamie Kennedy and the Headingley Sportshop Kawasaki of Jaden Goerzen.

Cole DeKoninck topped the 50cc 7-8 class Championship trio that also included D.J. Burmey and Nathan Wright.

In the 250 Intermediate class Colin Cyr came out as the King. Cyr grabbed the closely contested title by five points over Devon Ward. Luke McFadden took the third spot in the championship.

Almost Perfect? Rio Stoesz fell one moto short of a perfect series wining 13 of 14 motos while taking the 85cc 7-11 title. Lane Louttit secured second while Kayl Brown and Ty Shemko end the series tied for third.

Kim Houde stood on top of the box in the 40+ class with Renold Sawatsky and Duane Beischer completing the championship podium.

Derek Sierens (683) got the title in the 125 Junior class staying clear of the fierce battle behind him. Jeremy Breemersch made up seven points at Gimli to draw even in points with Lindsay Masse. Breemersch had the edge in the tiebreaker to take the second spot.

Any disappointment Masse felt giving up second in 125 Junior was likely short lived when he wrapped up the title in the GP Junior class. Sierens and Pearce McKellar took the remaining podium spots.

For the first time all season in the 250 Pro class Nick Dunn captured both motos on the day. Dunn used those wins to help secure the title over Pfeiffer and Jim Frederickson.

Luke McFadden grabbed himself a title in the 25+ class ahead of Matt Hamm and Jamie Devloo.

Troy Revet definitely shed the required blood, sweat and tears (ok I can only verify the first two but the cliché doesn’t work otherwise) to win a title. Revet took home the title in the very competitive 125 Intermediate class ahead of Devon Ward and Colin Cyr.

Having already secured the 250 Junior title Tommy Hassan rode his first race as an Intermediate in Gimli. Casey Vanderhart and Kraig Bergson round out the championship podium.

The 50cc 4-6 class saw Hunter Sexton crowned as champ followed by Madison McAlinden and Tyler Groening.

Josh Pfrimmer is Manitoba’s only multiple class champion in the Spring series. Pfrimmer took the titles in the 85cc 12-16 and Supermini classes. Stuart Brincheski and Jeremy Breemersch joined Pfrimmer on the box in the 85cc 12-16 class while Garrett Graboweski and Rio Stoesz complete the Supermini Championship triumvirate.

The Vet Master class saw some great racing this series and more times than not it was Jim Frederickson leading those battles. Frederickson secured the title over Kim Houde and Renold Sawatsky.

Forgetting to add oil during an oil change may have melted down Bev Bryce-Leger’s RM-Z250 last week but it couldn’t extinguish the fire she had for a title. Bryce-Leger took home the Ladies class title ahead of Carmen Regier and Gisele DeKoninck.

With the ATV classes running a reduced schedule there was no championship on the line at Gimli. Dennis Johnson made his first appearance in the ATV Beginner class a memorable one with a podium appearance going 3-3 for third overall.

While Sean Schrot matched that podium position with a 2-3 day in the ATV Pro class.

See you at the races
